A double mechanical seal is a type of mechanical seal with two primary seals or sets of faces, it can operate in various arrangements with a) a barrier (containment) between the sets of faces or b) a buffer (mixing).The inboard, or “primary seal” keeps the product contained within the pump housing. The outboard, or “secondary seal” prevents the flush liquid from leaking into the atmosphere. Two rotating seal rings are arranged facing away from each other.

The direction of rotation is seen from the drive end of the shaft.
